How to Get to Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is about an hour and a half from both Los Angeles and San Diego. The closest airport is John Wayne International Airport, a 30-minute drive. You’ll most likely want to rent a car if you’re visiting as there’s not much in the way of public transportation in California.

How to get around: Laguna Beach Trolley

Laguna Beach public transit is quite possibly the cutest public transport there is. The Laguna Beach trolley runs every 30 minutes and takes passengers up and down Pacific Coast Highway.

The 2 year-round routes are the Canyon lot where visitors can park for free in Lot 16 and walk or take the free trolley the mile and a half to the main beaches. Note that from the end of June until Labor Day, the Canyon route only runs Saturday 9-10 and Sunday 9-7. The Coastal route services North Laguna, Heisler Park, Downtown Laguna, and South Laguna.

In the summer, there are additional routes that bring visitors into Laguna from additional parking lots, removing the hassle of trying to find parking in this charming oasis.

Local’s Tip: Take advantage of Laguna Local, the city’s complimentary ride-share service. With on-demand transportation between residential areas and major activity centers, it’s a convenient way to access hiking trails that intersect with residential neighborhoods.

Where to park in Laguna Beach

As for parking, that can be a real hassle in Laguna Beach. Okay, fine, in all of SoCal! You can find stretches of the PCH that allow free street parking, south of Heisler Park. There are also plenty of meters and public lots or garages to use, but you have to be careful to read all the posted signs to avoid getting any tickets.

However, if you’re staying a few days, once you make it to your hotel, hopefully, you won’t have to get back in until you’re leaving. Laguna is a pretty walkable destination.

Nevertheless, the hotel’s affordability, cute design, and free parking make it an excellent choice for those looking for a Laguna Beach getaway. A public staircase just a short walk from the hotel leads to the beach, making it easily accessible for guests.

If affordability is your main priority, La Casa del Camino is a good option. This affordable hotel is located in the heart of Laguna Beach and offers a variety of rooms, from cozy standards to spacious suites. There’s a big, cozy fireplace in the lounge, but the building is on the older side.

The highlight of this hotel is its rooftop lounge, The Rooftop, where you can dine while enjoying a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. I dined here on my recent trip to Laguna and while everything tasted great, they didn’t quite have the range of options I was looking for. It was almost like upscale bar food.
