Searching for the most beautiful views of Porto? You’ve come to the right place! When I visited this historic city in Northern Portugal, my primary objective was to hunt down all the best Porto viewpoints and miradouros.
I never appreciate a Portuguese city more than at sunset and Porto is no exception. There’s just something about the cobblestone streets, the baroque churches covered in azulejos, and the shards of sunlight reflecting off the Douro River.
The allure of Porto’s viewpoints lies in their ability to showcase the city’s soul in a single sweeping panorama. Whether it’s the centuries-old architecture, the Douro River winding through the landscape, or the vibrant tapestry of red-tiled roofs, each viewpoint reveals a unique facet of Porto’s identity.
From the Dom Luis Bridge to the Crystal Palace Gardens, there’s no better way to discover this wonderful city than by admiring the gorgeous views from each side of the river. Let’s check out the Porto viewpoints that belong on every traveler’s itinerary!

From beautiful gardens to iconic landmarks with breathtaking views, visiting these Porto viewpoints can be a great way to learn about the city’s history while capturing incredible photos of some truly spectacular views!

1. Dom Luís I Bridge
No trip to Porto is complete without crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge! This architectural masterpiece connects the riverfront of Porto and Gaia, where all of the port wine cellars are located. While this bridge is typically one of the best views in Porto, its upper deck offers some stunning views of its own.
Pedestrians and trains pass on the upper level while cars drive across the lower bridge. I could have stood on this double-decker marvel for hours, snapping photos of Porto’s historic Ribeira district on one side and the vibrant Vila Nova de Gaia on the other.
Standing at 146 feet tall, the Dom Luís I Bridge treats you to unrivaled panoramic views of Porto’s charming Old Town, the Duoro River, and the picturesque town of Gaia. Completed in 1886, this iconic bridge, named after King Dom Luís I, was built by none other than Gustave Eiffel. (You know, Eiffel, like the tower!)
How to get to the Dom Luís I Bridge: Follow R. de Cima do Muro towards the Ribeira district, with the bridge clearly visible in the skyline. The bridge is easily accessible by foot, and you can also take a bus or metro to the São Bento station, a short walk away.
2. Crystal Palace Gardens
Not far from Porto’s bustling city center, lies the tranquil paradise of the Crystal Palace Gardens, or Jardins do Palácio Cristal. Perched atop a lush hill, this garden offers an unbeatable panoramic view of the city, sweeping over the Douro River and all the way to the majestic Arrábida Bridge. Trust me, this is one view of Porto you won’t want to miss!
Back in the 19th century, a grand Crystal Palace was erected on this very spot for the International Exhibition of Porto. Although the palace was demolished in the 1950s, the legacy lives on in the beautiful gardens… and on our social media feeds.
The gardens themselves are nothing short of a masterpiece, bursting with bright flowers, tall, leafy trees, and bubbling fountains. Fancy a little refreshment? There’s a charming café on site for that mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
Psst: Are you dying to know what an actual crystal palace looks like? You’re in luck. A similar structure still stands in Madrid’s Park Retiro.
I highly recommend a visit to Madrid in fall when you can see the leaves surrounding the Palacio Cristal turn enchanting shades of gold, orange and red.
3. Marginal de Gaia
Ahh the Gaia riverfront. This area is where you’ll find all the best port wineries in Porto. I have such fond memories of strolling alongside the Douro, trying world-class port, and eating a delicious seafood lunch.
The Marginal de Gaia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a great place to see Porto from a different perspective. Rather than looking down on the city, you’ll be able to gaze straight across the river at the colorful homes and historical edifices this Portuguese city is famous for.
My favorite way to get there? A quick trip in the Gaia cable car!
How to get to Marginal de Gaia: Take the D. Luís I Bridge from Porto and head south towards Av. Ramos Pinto. Alternatively, you can use the Gaia Cable Car which provides a scenic route from Jardim do Morro.
PORTUGUESE WINE
Interested in Portuguese wine? We may have just become best friends! Portugal has a long history of winemaking and plenty of delicious juice to try! I highly recommend a visit to any of the best wineries in Portugal for lots of learning and even more sipping.
The Douro Valley wineries, in particular, are nestled into the hills of what might be the most beautiful wine country in the world! This is where you can try Portugal’s renowned green wine, vinho verde. A trip to the charming Porto wineries is also a must. There’s nothing like enjoying a glass of the popular fortified wine, port, while you watch boats glide across the Douro River.
Crazy enough, that’s not all. There’s even more to learn with Madeira and the Azores Islands producing some unique wines as well!
4. Jardim do Morro
Jardim do Morro is a charming garden situated near the top of the iconic Dom Luis bridge, at the base of the Serra do Pilar Monastery.
Visit this Porto viewpoint to admire the picturesque Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar and the pastel-hued houses of the Ribeira.
It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a drink as you sit back and admire the stunning sunsets this viewpoint is known for. There’s also a playground for kids and regular musical performances.
How to get to Jardim do Morro: The garden is easily accessible via the lower level of the Dom Luis bridge from the Ribeira side. Alternatively, you can take the Line D metro to Jardim do Morro station.
5. Parque das Virtudes & Passeio das Virtudes
Parque das Virtudes is one of the most popular Porto viewpoints and for good reason! These terraced gardens offer grand, sweeping vistas of the Douro River, the remarkable Arrábida Bridge, and the architectural grandeur of the Porto Cathedral.
A lively place to watch the sunset, travelers from all over the world gather here alongside locals every evening to watch the sun go down. I spent golden hour here one day during my Porto solo travel trip and it truly felt like I was part of the local community. Everyone was so friendly and cheerful.
Near Parque das Virtudes is the equally enchanting Passeio das Virtudes. This historic public promenade functions as a natural extension of the park, offering additional space for leisurely strolls, and picnicking where you can soak up the sun and relish those magnificent views of the river and the cityscape.
How to get there: To reach Parque das Virtudes & Passeio das Virtudes, take the Line 22 tram or the 601 bus from the Porto city center. The park is a 15-minute walk from the São Bento train station.
6. Clerigo’s Tower
Standing tall at a height of 75 meters, Clérigos Tower is an iconic symbol of Porto that offers one of the best views in Porto. From its peak, I was able to see the city and its red-roofed skyline from just about every angle.
This viewpoint is a two-for-one. While here, you can also explore the small museum and baroque church. Getting to the top of the tower is a bit of a climb, but I promise it’s totally worth it. Once you reach the top, the entire city of Porto is laid out before you. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
Remember to book your tickets in advance.
How to get to Clerigos Tower: To reach Clérigos Tower, you can opt for a leisurely 20-minute walk from the São Bento train station or take bus lines 22, 61, or 200, alighting at the Clérigos stop.
Best Miradouros in Porto
At the city’s miradouros, or viewpoints in English, are where you’ll find the best views of Porto and its gorgeous skyline.
Let’s take a look at some of the best miradouros Porto has to offer.
7. Miradouro da Vitória
The Miradouro da Vitória is hands down my favorite Porto viewpoint and exactly the spot to catch the best sunset in Portugal. There’s no better spot for soaking up stunning views of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river.
Located in the old Jewish Quarter, near the Church of Our Lady of Victory and the Clérigos Tower, this viewpoint offers an impressive panoramic look at the city and its scenic riverfront.
What I loved most about this miradouro is that you can see all of Porto’s most iconic landmarks including the majestic Dom Luis I Bridge, the grand Palacio da Bolsa, and the impressive Sé Cathedral. Plus, the Douro River, the charming houses of Ribeira, and the historic Port wine cellars along the Cais de Gaia.
This is definitely the most popular place to watch the sunset. While it can get crowded in the summer months, if you only have time for one viewpoint in Porto and can’t make it across the bridge to Gaia, this is your spot!
How to get to Miradouro da Vitória: To reach Miradouro da Vitória, you can take a leisurely walk from the city center. Head towards the Clérigos Tower, and from there, navigate the charming narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter, following the signs for the Church of Our Lady of Victory.
8. Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
Miradouro da Serra do Pilar is another of the best viewpoints in Porto with its sweeping panoramas of the city and the sparkling river beneath. Originally a 16th-century convent, Serra do Pilar now serves as a military barrack on the northern side of the city.
From this miradouro, you’ll get a full view of the majestic Dom Luís I bridge, its unique double-deck structure stretching across the river.
Capturing the perfect sunset photos here, gazing upon Porto’s skyline as the sun gracefully sets over the Duoro River.
How to get to Miradouro da Serra do Pilar: To reach Miradouro da Serra do Pilar, you can use the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge from the city center, which leads directly to the viewpoint. Another option is to take the cable car from Gaia’s waterfront up to the Serra do Pilar Monastery, which offers a scenic route with panoramic views of the city.
9. Miradouro da Rua das Aldas
Located on Rua das Aldas, near the Cathedral, this remarkable miradouro in Porto provides a unique perspective of the city, showcasing the Ribeira and the picturesque boats that line the river.
This incredible miradouro, nestled just below the Cathedral, offers unparalleled vistas of the historic center and the mesmerizing Douro. This was the first viewpoint I visited in Porto and I was truly blown away by the breathtaking cityscape with the magnificent Igreja de São Lourenço in the backdrop.
For an unforgettable experience, visit at sunset hours to see radiant sunbeams illuminate the church’s stunning facade adorned with traditional azulejo tiles.
How to get to Miradouro da Rua das Aldas: To reach Miradouro da Rua das Aldas, navigate to the heart of the historic district near the Cathedral. Once there, follow the signs to Rua das Aldas, which will lead you directly to this breathtaking viewpoint.
10. Miradouro das Fontainhas
Located in one of Porto’s most historic districts, the Miradouro das Fontaínhas offers one of the most captivating viewpoints Porto has to offer. This lookout is situated near the Infante Bridge in a quiet, peaceful location. Here, you can admire the beauty of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river as well as catch a glimpse of the popular D. Luís I Bridge.
In addition to the scenic river views, this viewpoint also offers an opportunity to admire all four iconic Porto bridges: the Dom Luís I Bridge, the Infante Bridge, the Maria Pia Bridge, and the São João Bridge. During the São João do Porto’s festivities, the Fontainhas area becomes a popular spot to watch dazzling fireworks displays.

Best Views: Restaurants & Bars
There’s no better combination than a good meal and a great view. Check out some of the restaurants and rooftop bars with the best views of Porto.
11. Espaço Porto Cruz
A rooftop cocktail is the perfect follow-up to a port tasting at Espaco Porto Cruz. Head up to the Terrace Lounge 360 to enjoy delicious cocktails and stunning photo opps.
Espaço Porto Cruz’s rooftop offers an unparalleled vantage point of Porto. I highly recommend trying the cocktail made with Tawny port and passion fruit. A divine combination!
12. Miradouro Ignez
Miradouro Ignez, one of Porto’s viewpoints that doubles as a restaurant terrace, is loved by locals and tourists alike not only for its breathtaking river views but also for its authentic Portuguese cuisine.
Don’t miss the bacalhau à brás, a traditional Portuguese dish of shredded salted cod, thinly sliced potatoes, and onions, all bound together with scrambled eggs. It’s a flavorful meal that represents the heart and soul of Portuguese cuisine, brilliantly paired with a refreshing glass of vinho verde and epic views of Porto.
